The small North Riding village of Elvington is situated about 11 kilometres south east of the city of York. The village lies on the River Derwent and was, until 1974, in the East Riding. Despite being a small village it did hold its own races in the mid-1800s, with the first reported two day meeting being staged on Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th June 1846. The opening Silver Cup was won by Mr Bowman’s King of the Slack, who beat Miss Linch and Fanny Gray, while on the second day the Silver Tea Pot, reserved for featherweights, went to Mr Harper’s Black Bess. The next year the meeting was staged on Monday 31st May, when the Silver Cup was won by Mr Peaty’s Donna Maria, and on Tuesday 1st June when the Elvington Hunt Stakes went to Mr Bowman’s Fancyboy. The final meeting took place on Monday 19th June 1848. |
